Layers

I just finished this abstract acrylic piece. It is done with multiple layers of paint added and taken away. It is done with two colors and gesso, dioxazine purple and bright aqua. The purple letters on the bands have an iridescent medium in them.

Abstract acrylic painting

This piece was done with a number of layers. The pattern was scribed into a thick layer of dioxazine purple acrylic. The color is achieved with thin glazes of cerulean blue and more purple, as well as an interference blue paint, which is hard to see. The interference gives a brilliance that changes, similar to oil on water.

Abstract monochromatic painting

This abstract painting was done with masking tape, and in a monochromatic style with the color phthalo green. I reall like the differences in the triangle sizes, and how it is possible to achieve so many tints and shades of one color.

Abstract acrylic

I had a bit of a break for the holidays, spending some time with my family. I got a ton of new supplies for Christmas, so now I am going painting crazy. I have at least four new projects going at a time now. This is my newest acrylic abstract painting. The bottom layer is done with warm colors, reds, oranges and yellows. The next layer is a dark teal color, followed by a layer of a gesso glaze.

A brush with terror

I came back from my vacation to a snowy town. The weather was so bad yesterday, that I got into my first car accident, and hit a tree. Fortunately, no harm was done to anyone else, myself, the tree, or really even my car, thanks to a very low speed. However, for the couple of seconds that I was sliding out of control, though of a stop sign and toward the tree, I was terrified and knew I would crash. I decided to paint something using that same out of my control element. Using bits of paper and a hat, I randomly selected my mediums, tools, and paints. This is the out of my control, car crash and terror inspired painting. It was done with acrylic, thick gesso, blended fibers gel, and brushes. I am glad to have gotten something positive out of this experience, and hope to never have another accident. Happy Holidays.

The Network

Here is a quick pen drawing I did at the beach, titled The Network. Like the siren drawing, I did this one on paper that had watercolor marks made from another picture. I didn't think I could use the paper for any works to sell, so these fun sketches are the best option.

Siren's Song

Here is a sketch I just did on the beach in Miami, Florida. This is the first time I have been doing any art since last Friday. The galleries I visited today were so inspirational, as is the beach and ocean.

I Crow drawing

This is a colored pencil drawing I did at my art show today to keep myself entertained. I am giving it to a friend artist who loves crows.

Alcohol ink abstract

This abstract painting was done mostly with alcohol inks, as well as some acrylic inks. It has a bunch of layers, and has an organic flow to it. I have an art show tomorrow, and I am more than prepared for it. After that I will be on vacation until thursday, so I most likely won't have a chance to post until then.

Abstract drawing

Abstract drawing of a foot, done with colored pencils. Something different to do, I was a little painted out this week, and exhausted from finals....

Syringe painting

This abstract painting was done with acrylic paint, pouring medium and syringes. The under layer was painted with bubble wrap and netting, the syringes are filled with different amounts of blood colored paint. It took a whole bunch of days to dry, and still needs a couple days to finish. It is on canvas, and can be hung, without a frame.

Full schedule

What a busy week this is turning out to be. Along with school finals, I also am participating in two art shows this week, only two days apart. One is Wednesday, at the University Pizzeria at Youngstown State University. The other is Saturday, called the Last Minute Market at the B&O, also a local venue. I am excited to meet some new artists, and hopefully sell some pieces. With this busy week, and a vacation in Miami next week, I won't be able to create and post work as often. I am excited for some new ideas I can start working on after that, duing the rest of my break from school. So, here we go. One busy, but hopefully fulfilling week to go, followed by a relaxing one.

Explosive Thought

This piece was done using ink and watercolor on aquaboard. It is titled Explosive Thought.

Poured painting

Another painting done with pouring medium. These are the most difficult paintings to take a picture of. The glare throws the color off, especially because a flash cannot be used.

Poured painting

I can barely finish one of these paintings before I am ready to start the next. I remember playing skin factor as a kid, letting glue dry on my hands then peeling it off. Well, it is not nearly as fun now, as I am constantly trying to pick this stuff off my hands, and it does not want to come off. I think I am going to permanently have colored fingers.

Poured painting

This is a painting done with poured medium, I have been experimenting with ways to keep it from pouring off the sides of the canvas. If you slightly wet the canvas first, it spreads the medium a bit thinner, so it doesn't end up wasting a bunch later.

Pouring medium painting

This was also done with pouring medium and ink. I am having trouble keeping the pouring medium from overflowing off the canvas

Abstract poured painting

This painting was created with pouring medium and ink, and the colors are vivid and beautiful. I think I prefer using the ink with pouring medium, as it is more fluid and seems to float on the surface. Now that I have a gallon of pouring medium, I am going to be using it more often. That and spending more time peeling it off my skin, it is a mess to clean up.

Tummy ache

This piece is titled Tummy ache, and was inspired by the show Monsters inside me. It is painted with watercolor and ink. Poor guy, looks like he had a rough day.

Abstract acrylic

Here is an abstract acrylic painting I did with my new paint and palette knives. It was done on canvas board.

Chasing Yourself

This is a mashed together monster, made of a cat, a dog, and a mouse. It was done with watercolor and ink on aquaboard. This piece is titled Chasing Yourself

Abstract ink paintings

I am using bottle inks I just ordered for the first time in quite awhile and I love the color intensity. These paintings are done on canvas board, and texture was added with rubbing alcohol.

Watercolor monster

I just got all my new supplies today, I now own over a gallon of pouring medium and a half gallon of gesso. I am stocked up, and ready for some late nights painting. I ordered some new watercolors as well, which I love. I have started sketching monsters again, like I used to in high school, and now I am watercolor painting them as well. Stay tuned for a bunch of monster pieces in this style.

Abstract watercolor

Here is another abstract color I did, on aquaboard as well.
My new box of art supplies should be coming in the mail tomorrow, so I will be having all kinds of fun soon with new supplies.

Distorted painting part 2

This figure is coming along, and getting a little stranger looking as time goes on. Taking a break from this particular piece for a little while, I am going to look at it with fresh eyes in the morning.

Distorted figure painting part 1

This is the start of a distorted figure painting I am doing. It still needs a ton of work, but I have the general shape down and part of the background. I will keep posting new pics as it is coming along

Monochromatic painting

I was thinking that I had not used my paint brushes for quite a while. I have been obsessed with my palette knives for some time now, and thought I should get back to my roots. This was done solely with brushes, and in a monochromatic style. I used purple, with tints and shades.

Abstract watercolor

Here is an abstract watercolor that finished drying overnight. This one is also painted on an aquaboard. I am really enjoying painting watercolors again.

Abstract watercolor

Here is another abstract watercolor painting I just finished, also on aquaboard. This board is awesome, but is doing strange things to my watercolor pigments, breaking them up in a way i've never seen before. I like it for this style of painting, but will have to investigate more the exact reason behind this reaction.

Abstract watercolor

This is an abstract watercolor I did on these new aquaboards I just got. They work better than any heavy watercolor paper I have used, don't bend or warp, and lift without tearing fibers. I'm excited to keep using these, they were a great purchase. Here are two pictures, one with flash and one without to show the color and detail. I really need a better way to take higher quality pictures more often.

Workspace

I finally caved and busted out my shelves that had basically junk collecting on them. Now they have joined my semi organized art space, aka my dining room. At least it looks a bit better than the boxes stacked everywhere like they were.

Wave painting part 2

Here are some pictures of the finished wave inspired painting, after the clear coat layer. Glossy finishes are tricky to photograph correctly, so the first shows the sheen, but the color is off. The other two show a close up, to show the colors better.

Pouring medium painting

My first painting done completely with marbled pouring medium. It is a really fun medium to use, leaves a very glossy finish, and shows color brilliantly.
Here are two different photos to show how it looks both with and without the flash.
